On Tuesday, during his final State of the Union address, President Barack Obama said that Islamic State and Al Qaeda pose a direct threat to the American people and the world because “even a handful of these terrorists can do a lot of damage.” The president added that Islamic State doesn’t pose a threat to the existence of the United States.
Obama continued his address by ridiculing people who think Islamic State is a much bigger danger to the U.S. and the world than he estimates.
“As we focus on destroying ISIL (Islamic State), over the top claims that this is World War III just play in their hands. Masses of fighters on the back of pickup trucks and twisted souls plotting in garages or apartments pose an enormous danger to civilians and must be stopped, but they do not threaten our national existence; that’s the story ISIL wants to tell,” Obama said.
A short while before Obama held his State of the Union address, his former deputy CIA chief, Michael Morell, told the House Armed Services Committee a different story about the threat that ISIS poses to the United States and the world.
ISIS is “a significant strategic and lethal threat” to the United States and beyond, Morell said. The former deputy CIA chief warned that in Libya, ISIS could repeat the “blitzkrieg” that the world witnessed in Iraq.
“ISIS has gained affiliates faster than al-Qaeda ever did. From nothing a year ago, there are now militant groups in nearly 20 countries that have sworn allegiance to ISIS. They have conducted attacks that have already killed Americans, and they carry the potential to themselves to grab large amounts of territory.
“Libya is a place where this could happen in the near term. ISIS controls territory in Libya. They are currently expanding that territory and foreign fighters are beginning to go to Libya to fight with the ISIS group there. I would not be surprised if we woke up one morning and ISIS in Libya had grabbed a large part of Libyan territory. The same kind of blitzkrieg on a smaller scale that we saw in Iraq.” Morell told congressional representatives.
As Western Journalism has reported, Ansar al-Sharia, the local ISIS branch in Libya, is on the march and now controls more than 155 miles of Libya’s coastal plain. The Islamic State group controls many oil fields, and attacked Libya’s oil terminals last week. The ISIS branch also launched a devastating suicide attack on a police academy and continued to try to seize Libya’s oil export terminals this week.
Libya is not the only country that Islamic State wants to bring under its control. In Afghanistan, the local ISIS branch, Wilayat Khorasan, destroyed the Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad today. Wilayat Khorasan aims to destabilize the entire region, but especially Pakistan since it possesses nuclear weapons. For this reason, Islamic State chose to set up camp in Jalalabad, which is close to the border with Pakistan.
As for Obama’s remarks about “fighters on the back of pickup trucks and twisted souls plotting in garages,” the president apparently forgot that the ever-expanding worldwide war against al-Qaeda and now Islamic State (an off-shoot of Al Qaeda in Iraq) started on September 11, 2001, when a bunch of terrorists brought down the Twin Towers in New York after seizing control over civilian airplanes with no more than box cutters.
